Get your home ready for Spring/Summer season

Top 5 tips!

  1. Complete a room by room clear out. Focus on one room a weekend to make it easier. Gather anything that’s accumulated over winter that you won’t use over the next few months (looking at you collection of scarves and cardigans hanging from the coat rack) or that you possibly won’t use again (pile of books that you’ve already read next to the bed) and pack them away for next season/use or give them away to Vinnies if you’re over them. Pack your warmer clothes away and rotate out your summer stuff (ditch anything you didn't wear last season or is now possibly too small - thanks COVID). Donate or throw out anything (clothes/decor/toys/gadgets) that is past it, hasn't been used for ages or has been outgrown. De-clutter, de-clutter, de-clutter. - you'll be amazed how much more relaxed and clear minded you can become with a good clear out!
  2. Clean all that stuff you've been putting off (or hire someone else to if you can afford it). Clean out air conditioning units and wipe down/dust fans in preparation for high use during the hotter months. Clean the windows and glass doors in your home so you can let the light in (without being annoyed by fingerprint collections). Clean out the fridge and throw out any condiments or jars with iffy expiry dates. Organise your pantry. Throw outdated/unused stuff away and organise everything else into labelled canisters, jars and baskets. Give bathrooms and kitchen a good going over. Sweep off patios and decks, blast your pavers, driveway and outdoor furniture with a high pressure cleaner.
  3. Lighten up by swapping out heavy bedding/throws etc for lighter options (that goes for material as well as shades). Replace shaggy or plush rugs with flatweave or natural options such as jute. Let the light in! Tie back curtains, swap out for sheer or change up to shutters if you have the budget (these give you the versatility to close up in winter and open right up for cross ventilation and cooling breezes during summer).
  4. Change it up with easy swaps like new lounge cushions (just put a new cover straight over existing fills to save money), add inexpensive downloaded prints to existing frames to add a splash of colour for summer vibrancy or coastal cool. Or hang a small mirror to give that reflection of light and space near your entryway or on your front deck. Move your existing furniture into new spots in the same room or into different rooms to get a fresh feel for zero investment. Even switch up room functions or ownership (bedroom swap anyone?) for real fun.
  5. Satisfy your senses by adding fresh flowers and/or greenery to your home. Buy bunches of flowers inexpensively at local or flower markets or just go for a walk in your neighbourhood and pick yourself a posey or a few springs of greenery from overhanging plants. Better yet, plant out your own garden! Can’t get your hands on any florals? Get some citrus, rose, any other floral or fresh scent happening in a room vaporiser or beautiful candle to ensure that your place always feels welcoming with the zesty aroma of the warm months.
